AVENING PARISH COUNCIL
WELCOMES YOU TO OUR
VILLAGE
This page will point you towards the most
relevant information and contacts, and help
you quickly find your way around the village.
As new residents to Avening, you have come
to live in one of the oldest villages in
Gloucestershire - we were mentioned in The
Doomsday Book. With a history of wool
manufacture in three mills, we have the only
church in England founded and dedicated by
an English Queen. Our church was built in
1080, and in its current form is a grade 1 listed
building.
We have a population in excess of 1000
people, making us the largest village in the
South Cotswolds and we are represented on
Cotswold District Council by Richard Morgan.
Our Gloucestershire County Councillor is
Stephen Hirst, and both councillors attend our
monthly Parish meetings (usually on the 3rd
Thusday of each month) which are overseen
by Tony Slater our Parish Council Chairman.
We have two public houses in the village - The
Bell Inn, which is over 400 years old, and has
an in house Indian Restaurant and takeaway;
The Queen Matilda offers a very good range
of traditional food and has a number of en-
suite B&B bedrooms; and just outside,
towards Nailsworth you will find the
Weighbridge - famous for its delicious 1-in-1
pies. We also have a licenced social club with
a function room, traditional bowling alley, and
is home to the Community Cafe on Tuesday
mornings. There are several other clubs who
meet on various days of the week. We also
boast a lively W.I. a youth club, and a monthly
cinema club.
A monthly magazine, The Villager, is delivered
to all houses on the 1st of each month - this
has a lively mix of news, events and other
local information.
Finally, we are very proud of our school which
is rated very highly, and overseen by its
headmistress, Jane Rushton.
The Parish Council hope your move to our
village proves to be a great success and look
forward to having the chance to meet you at
an event or just come to a Parish council
meeting as a guest.
